What is CFRTP?
Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic is a composite material (type of FRP or CFRP) produced from a combination of carbon fibers and thermoplastic resin, as the name suggests. The enhanced “lightweight, strong, and non-corrosive” properties exhibited by this advanced CFRP material has gained immense traction across a wide range of industries and applications.
Features
Carbon fiber itself is a yarn-like material with high specific strength. As a yarn, it cannot retain form and is therefore composited with a plastic polymer to achieve a new moldable material with enhanced strength and elasticity. CFRP is a strong and lightweight fiber reinforced plastic that is generally produced using a thermosetting resin which hardens when heated, like a cookie.
On the other hand, CFRTP is a general term for a CFRP created using a thermoplastic resin that softens when heated and hardens on cooling, like chocolate, and provides 1) superior capacity for molding and shape-forming, and 2) advantageous recyclability.
