Heat-Resistant Resins: An Overview on Their Characteristics and Applications

Introduction

Heat-resistant resins are plastic materials engineered to maintain their physical properties in high-temperature environments while resisting deformation and degradation. These specialized resins are widely used in electronic components, aerospace parts, medical equipment, and automobiles.
This column describes the primary types of heat-resistant resins and their characteristics.

Polyimide (PI)

– Heat Resistance: 300°C or higher
– Features: Extremely high heat and chemical resistance with excellent mechanical strength
– Applications: Electronic substrates, aerospace components, and heat-resistant wire coatings

Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS)

– Heat Resistance: Approx. 260°C
– Features: High heat resistance, chemical resistance, and mechanical strength
– Applications: Automotive parts, electrical and electronic components, and pumps

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)

– Heat Resistance: Approx. 250°C
– Features: High heat and chemical resistance with excellent mechanical strength
– Applications: Medical equipment, aerospace parts, as well as parts used to create semiconductors

Polyetherimide (PEI)

– Heat Resistance: Approx. 200°C
– Features: High rigidity, excellent flame resistance, and high insulation performance
– Applications: Electrical and electronic components, aircraft interior materials

Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP)

– Heat Resistance: Approx. 280°C
– Features: High dimensional stability, excellent heat and chemical resistance
– Applications: Connectors and electronic components

Fluoropolymers (PTFE, PFA, FEP)

– Heat Resistance: Approx. 260°C (varies by type)
– Features: Excellent heat and chemical resistance and is non-adhesiveness
– Applications: Chemical equipment components, heat-resistant seals, and insulating materials

Silicone Resin

– Heat Resistance: Approx. 250°C
– Features: Excellent heat resistance, weather resistance, and high insulation performance
– Applications: Heat-resistant sealing materials, electrical parts, and medical equipment

Summary

Heat-resistant resins can improve durability and safety when properly selected for the appropriate operating environment and application. These materials play an important role in industries that require performance in high-temperature environments.
