Processing CFRTP

CFRTP Characteristics

CFRP (thermosetting resin) and CFRTP (thermoplastic resin) have relatively similar carbon fiber properties, but vastly distinct characteristics due to the differing resin matrixes.

CFRP: Thermosetting Resin

The thermosetting resin used in CFRP undergoes a chemical reaction that causes the material to harden (cure) when heated.

Main Molding Method

Autoclave molding, the hallmark method, excels in small-volume production and thin or large structural parts. This method does not require compression molding whereby the material is closed and pressed between an upper and lower mold, reducing costs.

Suitable Applications and Uses

Thermosetting resin based CFRP is ideal for creating molds for prototype development. Autoclave molding has few shape constraints and can be used to create prototypes for CFRTP products.

CFRTP: Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic

As thermoplastic resin used in CFRTP does not rely on a chemical reaction, it can be produced with shorter lead times, re-melted and reformed, and more easily recycled. Recyclability is one of its most outstanding advantages.

Main Molding Method and Uses

Unlike CFRP, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic is primarily molded with compression molding methods. This makes it more suitable for medium-volume productions with relatively thick walls or vertical sloping.

Summary

We hope this has offered you better insight into the key differences between CFRP and CFRTP. The appropriate manufacturing method will vary depending on the product shape, structure, and production volume or lot. Since heat resistance is dependent on the resin, the choice of material will also depend on the thermal characteristics and specifications of the product.
